This is Roberto, lovingly named by my professor.
Roberto was animated in Maya using expressions as part of an assignment for a procedural animation class. Our assignment was to create a working system of gears.
When I designed this model, I wanted to take it a step further by moving the wings up and down in addition to the gears on the wings. I wanted to make sure something was powering the vertical movement of the wings. I did a lot of research on gears and systems to design a gear that could rotate and pivot as the wings move.
Because this was part of a procedural animation class, I also wanted to have procedural textures in everything except for the wings of the butterfly itself. It was very interesting to see how far I can take an environment without drawing textures.
